The Hong Kong Jockey Club Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP), affiliated with the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and The Salvation Army will hold a seminar on April 15 to delve into the recently finished program “MIND - Me In a New Day Oral History Programme”, sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust.
During the seminar, Professor Paul Yip Siu-Fai, Director of the Centre, will present the programme’s statistics and effectiveness. Dr Wong Wai Ling, the trainer of this program and Researcher of Oral History, will discuss the communication patterns across generations. Moreover, the impact of the intergenerational connection on mental well-being will be shared by a pair of participants, including an elderly person and a young individual. Furthermore, Dr Liu Kwong Sun, Specialist Psychiatrist and Associate Director of HKUCSRP, will address the mental health of Hong Kong's elderly and the community support available.
Programme overview & Objectives:
It is our collective responsibility to address the declining mental well-being of the elderly in Hong Kong. This programme (launching from March 2021 to January 2024) utilises the power of intergenerational connection to restore confidence among the elderly and emphasize their intrinsic value within families and society.
By fostering a sense of purpose and connection, the programme paired 100 elderly individuals from the Wong Tai Sin district with younger participants. Through these intergenerational interactions, the elderly can share their experiences and wisdom. The youngsters then transformed these enriching narratives into captivating audiobooks and porcelain figures. The audiobooks and porcelain figures can illuminate the elderly’s past experiences from a new positive perspective, affirm their contribution to their families and society, and rethinking their sense of self-worth.
