Course Description
This module reviews major theories, concepts and research on adolescent development and behaviour, and examines ways of guiding, counselling and supporting adolescents in their whole-person development in school settings. The course will address (i) major theories of adolescent development; (ii) the interdependency of all aspects of development, i.e. physical, cognitive, academic, career and personal-social, and social relationships; (iii) basic concepts and strategies in developmental, preventive and remedial guidance; (iv) the roles of teachers in student guidance and counselling; (v) and the application of counselling skills with adolescent students.

Mode of Delivery **
This module will use a combination of the following modes of teaching and learning. Problem-based and computer-based
ILN / FLMS-Moodle Forum, collaborative problem solving group, mini-lectures, experiential learning activities, movie clips, quiz, interviews
with teachers and adolescents, and personal reflection. Collaborative Problem Solving Before and Beyond University Session (ILN / FLMS-Moodle Forum)
- Before each session you are required to work on at least ONE problem and POST your response on ILN / FLMS-Moodle Forum. There
is no need to write long answers (half a page can is acceptable; must not exceed one page). You are strongly encouraged
not just to write your own answer to a problem, but to build on and reply to submissions from others. BRING a hard copy
of your online work to class for group discussion.
- You are encouraged to work on other problems, and to respond to classmates.
During and After University Session
- Students will take turns acting as group leader, recorder, and active group members.
- Each group will be assigned by the tutor a problem to work on. The group leader and recorder will work together to lead
your group discussion for 15 minutes and present to the whole class for 10 minutes. Group members participate in
the group discussion actively. - After class, the group leader and recorder will jointly prepare a summary note on the group problem (group presentation
+ comments from class & tutor). Try to incorporate ILN / FLMS-Moodle notes, class discussion and tutor feedback. - The recorder and the group leader POST the group summary note on ILN / FLMS-Moodle before the next university session.
New learning approaches are adopted in this module emphasizing students collaborating and helping each other learn. You
would not expect tutors to give individual feedback on ILN. Instead, tutor feedback will be given in class on the problems
and discussion.
