Synopsis
Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) face new challenges following the country’s shift to a new normal of economic development featuring medium-to-high speed growth and emphasising quality, efficiency and innovation. With economic triumphs heard from their private peers against a backcloth of Beijing’s Internet-Plus strategy – an aim to push the Chinese economy to enter a digital age, calls for a complete overhaul of SOEs have never been as rapid now than before. How can China’s state-owned sector cope with challenges and ride on opportunities that the era of reforms and internet brings? With their immense assets at over 100 trillion yuan and employing over 30 million people, will further liberalising and internationalising SOEs become a strong driving force of China’s economic growth? Mr. Frank Ning, Chairman of COFCO Corporation, will share his experience of successfully running SOE giants and his insights into possible strategies SOEs in general could make in response to the changes and opportunities in the Internet-Plus era. Economic and financial heavyweights Mrs. Laura Cha and Mr. Peter Wong will share their views from different perspectives in a panel discussion moderated by Professor Y C Richard Wong that follows.
