Subject: Violence is never the solution
Dear students, colleagues, alumni and friends,
In the light of developments over the past few days, I am even more convinced in my opposition to violence of any kind, by any party, at any juncture and for any reason. I maintain that violence is never, never a solution. It was heart-breaking to witness the events of the past weekend and, like many of you, I worry about the safety and well-being of our students and the people of Hong Kong. My thoughts are with all who were injured in recent incidents and I sincerely wish them a speedy recovery.
I appeal to all leaders and parties to resolve the differences between them through vigorous rational debate in a calm, civil and mutually respectful manner. We must find a solution and move beyond the deadlock.
On behalf of the University, I urge our students, staff and all members of the Hong Kong community to make their personal safety and that of others their highest priority. The University stands ready to assist in whatever way it can during these difficult times and I believe universities can contribute towards social healing for the greater future of Hong Kong.
