15 Oct 2013
The Advanced Robotics Laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Hong Kong, is now home to one of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots “Atlas”. Atlas will “meet the media” on October 17 (Thursday). The Faculty of Engineering will also take the opportunity to announce the progress on the HKU Advanced Robotics Initiative.
The Atlas robot is one of only seven Atlas robots in the world, and the only one in Asia. It is capable of a variety of natural movements, including dynamic walking, calisthenics and user-programmed behavior.
About Advanced Robotics Initiative
Robotics has been identified as one of the strategic research themes of the Faculty of Engineering. The Faculty introduced its “Advanced Robotics Initiative” in 2012, a long-term research programme aiming to foster leading-edge technology development in HKU as well as to enter the world stage of innovation in the area of robotics. Progressive achievement begins with the establishment of the Advanced Robotics Laboratory in April that attracts top researchers from the US, Japan and UK for joint development, the joint effort between HKU and Case Western Reserve University under the name “Team Case” won the world’s top nine in June to enter international Robotics Challenge, as well as the attention and demand increasingly drawn from research agencies, the industrial and manufacturing sectors since the Laboratory’s launching in July.
