A review of “Radio I Care” – the first mental health web radio in Hong Kong
13 Nov 2013
In the 21st century, one of the most concerning problems among people living in cities is “mental health”. Those individuals affected by mental health problems are often reluctant to seek help. In 2010, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) established the first internet-based radio website “Radio I Care” to promote mental health in Hong Kong. It seeks to provide 24-hour comprehensive information on mental health to encourage early detection and help-seeking behaviours.
“Radio I Care” accumulated approximately 500,000 hits in the past three years with about 1,800 individuals accessed the website every month. The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has conducted a 18-month study to review the experience of launching “Radio I Care” and evaluate the impacts of the “Radio I Care” on audiences or individuals concerned. More than 1,300 participants have been involved in surveys, in-depth interviews and focus groups at various stages of the study.
TWGHs and the Faculty of Social Sciences of HKU will host a press conference on November 15 (this Friday) to release the results of the study and let the public learn more about the services provided by “Radio I Care”. New strategic directions of “Radio I Care” will also be shared in the press conference. There will be a patient in recovery from mental illness and a family member to share their experiences on how “Radio I Care” had assisted them. A psychiatrist will analyse how the services and information of “Radio I Care” can help those in need. He will also explain how “Radio I Care” helps provide support to his patients.
