HKU to release research findings on effective elder abuse interventions
17 Dec 2013
Given the rapidly aging population, the number of elder abuse cases is likely to increase substantially. Timely and effective interventions are urgently needed to address the problem.
CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors, set up by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, donated HK$6.48million to the Hong Kong Christian Service to launch the CADENZA Community Project: Elder at PEACE to identify evidence-based intervention programmes for elder abuse. The research was conducted in Kwai Tsing District, which is one of the worst affected areas in terms of the number of reported elder abuse cases according to the Social Welfare Department. Dr. Elsie Yan, a Jockey Club CADENZA Fellow and Assistant Professor of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong, has under the project assessed the effectiveness of two intervention models, “Case Management” and “Empowerment and Mediation”. The study is a pioneering investigation of the effectiveness of the two elder abuse intervention models.
A press conference will be held tomorrow (December 18) to release the study findings. Two elderly clients will share their experience at the conference on how they have benefited from the service and moved on putting their traumatic experience behind.

“CADENZA: A Jockey Club Initiative for Seniors” is a project launched by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with a donation of HK$380 million in 2006. The project aims to nurture academic leadership in social gerontology and change the mindset and attitude of the general public through a range of training and public education programmes. The project also encourages cross-sectional collaboration between organizations and the implementation of innovative elderly services and programmes in order to bring about a new mode of elderly care services to prepare for a rapidly ageing society.
