HKU IT system recorded suspicious behavior on February 27-28

During a regular surveillance study on February 27-28, Information Technology Services staff of the University of Hong Kong detected suspicious behavior in the system and that some Trojan hacking software was found harvesting account names and passwords of 40 personal webserver users and 146 email users. The affected accounts were suspended immediately and the staff members and students concerned were asked to change the password before they could re-activate their accounts. Immediate action was also taken to remove the hacking software and measures taken to prevent further hacking.
The situation has been monitored closely by the University since the intrusion was detected. The University will continue to monitor closely the situation and review regularly the system to ensure security.
The case has been reported to the police and Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data.
