HKU CCPL to hold “Portraits of Loss and the Quest for Justice” documentary screening and “Remembering June 4th 1989: The Role of Hong Kong in China” panel discussion

The Centre for Comparative and Public Law (CCPL) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Human Rights in China (HRIC) and the Law Association of HKU Students Union will screen a documentary entitled “Portraits of Loss and the Quest for Justice”, a video filmed by the Tiananmen Mothers and produced by Human Rights in China, on June 3 (Tuesday).
The video was shot over a period of five years by the Tiananmen Mothers, a group of family members of the victims of the June Fourth crackdown. The video presents portraits of ordinary citizens who died in Beijing in June 1989 and their family members’ tenacious efforts to demand accountability. Since its premiere in 2009 at the Asia Society in New York, Portraits of Loss has been screened in Brussels, Geneva, Hong Kong, Paris, and Yerevan.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion on the role of Hong Kong in the on-going pursuit of justice for the victims of June Fourth and official accountability for the violent crackdown on unarmed civilians. The panelists are: Professor Jerome A. Cohen, New York University School of Law; Mr Albert Ho, member of the Legislative Council, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; and Dr Teng Biao, visiting scholar at the Centre for Rights and Justice, Chinese University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law.
