Youth Biodiversity Conservation Leadership project holds graduation ceremony for secondary school participants
The Student Knowledge Exchange Project “Take Action! Youth Biodiversity Conservation Leadership Training Scheme” (“Take Action!”) is designed to give Hong Kong's secondary school students a chance to reconnect with nature and become leaders in promoting conservation and environmental education. After five months of classroom and on-field training, 63 local students from 16 different secondary schools around Hong Kong will be graduating as young leaders of local biodiversity conservation, spreading the message of what they have learned to their peers.
“Take Action!” is one of the first programmes of its kind to empower secondary school students to initiate conservation and environmental education work at their own schools. During the Graduation Ceremony, selected students will present their "School Biodiversity Conservation Plans" -- an initiative wholly designed and implemented by students to encourage conservation activities within their school area.
Members of the media are cordially invited to attend the Ceremony. Details are as follows:

HKU Faculty of Education Distinguished Lecture “Empires of Learning in East Asia”
By Professor Simon Marginson, Professor of International Higher Education, Institute of Education, University of London
Higher education and science are central to modern societies and to the global strategies of states. East Asia is becoming the world’s third great zone of higher education, science and innovation, alongside North America and Western Europe/UK, though this development has yet to be fully understood outside the region. What are the drivers of the remarkable post-Confucian educational systems in China, Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore? What are their strengths and limitations? Is a new model of the university emerging? What are the implications for world society, economy and polity?
The Faculty of Education of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will hold the Distinguished Lecture on “Empires of Learning in East Asia”, to be delivered by Professor Simon Marginson of University of London. The lecture is sponsored by Tin Ka Ping Education Fund of Tin Ka Ping Foundation and UGC Knowledge Exchange Funds.

3. “The Tank Man and the Changing Art and Craft of Photojournalism”
An exhibition to display the artworks of American photographer Jeff Widener including the "Tank Man", one of the world’s most iconic images in modern photo-journalism. This centrepiece will be presented in a small group of 12 photos all documenting the political events at Tiananmen Square in June 1989 from June 3 through June 29, 2014.
Jeff Widener is an American photographer who took the famous image of a lone man confronting a column of tanks during the 1989 Tiananmen Square uprising, an image so iconic that it is known simply as “the tank man photo.” For that picture, taken while he was a photojournalist for The Associated Press, Widener was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Widener managed to sneak into Beijing for the two-week assignment. He secretively positioned himself to take the tank man photo and then had it furtively sent for transmission — and eventual front-page display in newspapers worldwide. At the Square, Widener documented the campaign of the students and other street protesters, and was almost killed when a stray rock thrown by a protester struck him in the face.
