HKU to hold Inauguration Ceremony for New Students

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) will welcome its new students at the Inauguration Ceremony on August 27 (Wednesday). Mr. Benjamin Hung, Regional Chief Executive Officer, Greater China, Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited, will be the Guest of Honour to address the students. Other HKU members who will give welcoming address at the Ceremony are HKU President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Mathieson, Dean of Student Affairs Dr. Albert Chau, Chairman of Convocation Mr. Choi Sau Yuk and President of the Hong Kong University Students' Union Miss Yvonne Leung.

Exhibition – “Career Discovery in Landscape Architecture” Workshop 2014

Since 2009, HKU Faculty of Architecture has been organizing the “Career Discovery in Landscape Architecture” (CDLA) - an exploration program for high school students who are interested in bringing a more sustainable living environment to our city. CDLA offers a 3-week program each summer to young people to experience what it is like to be in the profession of landscape architecture.

This year, CDLA is taking students to install a 1:1 scale “Playscape” installation at HKU Campus, hoping to bring active participation to public spaces, and to induce new ways of interpreting landscape architecture by using Chinese steamers and plant materials. Through the themes of “Sit”, “Lie”, “Step”, “Cave”, “Reach”, and “Pass Through”, students will create play spaces that require visitors to perform the themed action in order to interact with plants selected.

University Museum and Art Gallery exhibitions

“Carlos Cruz-Diez: Circumstance and Ambiguity of Colour”

An exhibition to showcase the works of contemporary master of colour, Venezuelan kinetic and op artist Carlos Cruz-Diez, and is the first time Carlos’ art pieces are on view in Hong Kong. Celebrated for his attention to light and colour, Carlos’ paintings and light installations are based on his advanced theories on the perception of colour. He has been ranked among other masters of colours including Seurat (1859–1891), Cezanne (1839–1906), Albers (1888–1976), Frank-Stella (b. 1936).

“Refuse the Shadows of the Past: Five Years of Austrian Art Made in China”

In being the motto of the show and title of an artwork, “Refuse the Shadows of the Past” is a commemorative exhibition that celebrates the fifth anniversary of artistic creation and transformation by Austrian and other international artists working in China with a concentrated focus on the past and present China. Five years also mark a longer existing program of internationalisation, initiated by the Austrian government to allow artists to work around the world.

The exhibits include a selection of works that have been shown in Beijing, Shenzhen, Chongqing and Ningbo in the last five years, and include video works, objects, installations and book works as well as collages, drawings and photographic works. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Austrian Consulate General in Hong Kong and Macau and the Austrian initiative Embassy of the Arts.
