HKU St John’s College Martin Lectures 2014 "Moslem-Christian Dialogue: Sexuality and Gender"
The Martin Lectures started many years ago to commemorate the work of a caring pioneer, the Revd. Ernest Martin, and to celebrate his spirituality and life. Past speakers invited included Michael Ramsey, John Macquarrie, Don Cuppitt, Jens Scherpe, et al.
These lectures are intended to create awareness and understanding of issues of importance to the Church and the Community at large; to educate through rational and in-depth discussions; to point towards possible courses of action thus beginning a process of acceptance, reconciliation, and healing; and the righting of wrongs.
This year’s Martin Lectures will endeavor to create a dialogue between Moslems and Christians on Sexuality and Gender. The Moslem’s and Eastern Orthodox views will be presented first and to be followed with a review from an Asian and Protestant perspective. Through a better understanding of each other’s positions of faith and theology, it is hoped that a better understanding can be achieved by creating a dialogue without prejudice.
We need to start with a better understanding, then we would be able to appreciate the complexities of sexuality and gender, as both a bio-psychological phenomena and a socio-religio construct, constantly being challenged, manipulated, and reconstructed by new understanding of medical sciences, and the forces of globalization, economics, and agendas (visible and invisible) of religious and political leaderships.
Details of the lectures:
Date: October 4, 2014 (Saturday)
Time: 9am to 1pm
Venue: Room 109, Lower Ground (LG) K. K. Leung Building

HKUL: Scholarly and Art works of the Family of Zhuangyuan Wu Lu
On 13 January 2014, the Libraries hosted a donation ceremony to honour Mr Ng Tsz Tung (吳紫棟) and his family for donating their family treasures to the Fung Ping Shan Library. The Libraries will hold an exhibit of these great treasures in the Special Collections, 1/F Main Library, the University of Hong Kong from the October 6 to October 24, 2014.
Mr Ng had devoted a great deal of time and effort in the past 2 decades collecting the dispersed art works of his great grandfather, the late Mr Wu Lu (吳魯), who ranked first in a palace examination held during the Guangxu (光緒) era (1871-1908) and was honoured with the widely-admired title Zhuangyuan (狀元). The donation includes Mr Wu Lu’s script for the imperial examination, manuscripts of the poems he wrote grieving at the Eight Power Expedition (八國聯軍) to China in 1900, as well as a number of calligraphy and books written by four generations of the Wu family. These are not just treasures of the Wu family but also the treasures of the Chinese culture.

University Museum and Art Gallery exhibitions
First time public display in HK: "A Universe Within: Suo Zhenhai's Inside-painted Snuff Bottles"
Period: September 24, 2014 (Wednesday) to November 2, 2014 (Sunday)
An exhibition of Suo Zhenhai's Inside-painted Snuff Bottles from the Hong Yuan Collection will be on display from September 24 to November 2, 2014 at the University Museum and Art Gallery, the University of Hong Kong (UMAG).
Contemporary miniature painter Suo Zhenhai (1944–2006), a native of Raoyang in Hebei Province, studied the art and culture of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, and the painterly styles and minutely detailed depictions of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. A prolific artist, he has exhibited internationally and gained a reputation for his finely executed artworks, as well as for his work at the Hengshui Xisan Inside Painting Art Academy where he taught for years. The museum’s exhibition shows some 150 bottles decorated predominantly with landscape painting and genre scenes. Altogether, the array of objects testifies the Master Suo’s ability to represent ‘a universe within’ and to the more wide-spread and still ongoing interest in and high-quality manufacture of a medium cherished for centuries.
The University Museum’s display coincides with the 46th annual convention of the International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society, which will take place first time in Hong Kong.
"Picasso Ceramics"
Period: September 3, 2014 (Wednesday) to November 2, 2014 (Sunday)
The exhibition “Picasso Ceramics”, from the Nina Miller Collection, provides a unique opportunity to study the sculptural qualities and three-dimensional aspect of Pablo Picasso's work, never before seen in Hong Kong. From World War II to the end of Picasso's life in 1973, the Spanish artist created thousands of carefully sculpted and, often, colourfully glazed, objects that give testimony to his artistic diversity, ingenuity and enormous creative powers.
The exhibition includes more than 100 ceramic works, both Picasso's Madoura editions and unique individual pieces, as well as lithographs and posters designed by the artist, and images by renowned photographers depicting Picasso in his studio and home. Coming from one of the largest collection of the artist's ceramic ware in the world, this is the first time that the London-based Nina Miller Collection is ever seen publicly.
