15 Nov 2014
The Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will present the “Frontier and Ethnicity” public forum on November 18 (Tuesday) and “The Contributions of Émmanuel-Édouard Chavannes towards Chinese Traditional Historiography and the Transformation of European Sinology” public lecture on November 19 (Wednesday). Professor Zhang Guangda, HKU Sin Wai-Kin Distinguished Visiting Professorship in the Humanities, and Chair Professor of National Chengchi University, Taipei, will be the main speaker. Professor Zhang, a renowned historian, will be engaged in a dialogue to share his views with staff and students on November 20 (Thursday).
In the forum “Frontier and Ethnicity”, the speakers will discuss the deeply seated complexities in the nexus between frontier and ethnicity. In the public lecture, Professor Zhang will discuss the contributions of Émmanuel-Édouard Chavannes, whose greatest contribution was essentially the establishment of a positivist paradigm within Sinology. He had transformed the discipline more effectively than his contemporaries and led Sinology on the path of modern science.
