The Hong Kong Connection Before & After the First Lesbian & Gay March on Washington in 1979
The speaker Daniel C. Tsang, Distinguished Librarian at the University of California, Irvine, Libraries, will address the radical roots of gay liberation organizing and coalition building in the United States that culminated in the October 1979 Lesbian & Gay March on Washington, where he helped organize a gay Asian contingent. He will talk about how activism in the United States and Canada impacted the early underpinnings of gay liberation in Hong Kong. He also details the activities and writings of Sam Ng Siu-ming, from Hong Kong, who actually visited the White House as part of a delegation of gay people of color in 1979, and founded Pink Triangle Press in Hong Kong on his return. Ng was also the key individual to introduce early German gay liberationist Magnus Hirschfeld to Hong Kong readers. Tsang ends his talk by comparing the early gay liberation struggles with the activities of Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement.

ID Exchange — A Conceptual Photography and Text Project - Opening and Talk
Curator: Cheung Chi Wai, Kwong Po Ling Ida
ID Exchange is a locally originated photography and text project on-going since 2005. The project aims to understand how people living in Hong Kong think about apparel and fashion, and the meanings and symbols behind their choices. Subjects in the photographs are volunteer participants. Each participant chooses to exchange his/her outfit with another person of his/her choice innovatively. Cheung Chi Wai, a veteran and renowned photography artist, will then arrange dedicated shooting sessions with the volunteers and produce new photography works. Through this process, the participants will have a chance to explore and reflect on his or her self-identity. As of today, 20 exchanges have been photographed and documented.
