to deliver keynote on MOOCs and the Internationalization of Higher Education
04 Dec 2014
Yale President Emeritus Richard C. Levin will deliver a keynote entitled “MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and the Internationalization of Higher Education” at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) on December 5, 2014. In his address, Professor Levin will reflect on a career of over two decades of leadership in higher education. He will discuss common challenges and lessons from his experiences at Yale, his views on the state of higher education in Asia, and his recent decision to join Coursera, a leading MOOC platform. This keynote speech and the associated workshops and seminars aim to support capacity development efforts at HKU in its MOOC initiative.
Professor Richard C. Levin is the President Emeritus of Yale University and Chief Executive Officer of Coursera. He is the Frederick William Beinecke Professor of Economics and Director of the Project on U.S.-China Relations at Yale University. He is the longest tenured Ivy League president, serving from 1993 to 2013. The internationalisation of Yale was one of Professor Levin’s achievements. A major set of initiatives was made possible under his leadership –making international experiences the norm for all undergraduates, extending need-based financial aid to international students in Yale College, and planning and opening Yale-NUS College in Singapore as a model of liberal arts education for Asia. He was instrumental in Yale's visionary effort in experimenting online education back in 2000. His publications, "The Work of the University” (2003) and the sequel “The Worth of the University” (2013) are widely read among education leaders.
