Two HKU professors named Changjiang Scholars by the Chinese Ministry of Education
Professor Frederick Leung honored the first Changjiang Scholar in Mathematics Education

Professor Frederick Leung at the Faculty of Education; and Professor Zhou Zheng at the Faculty of Business and Economics, of the University of Hong Kong have been appointed Changjiang Scholars by the Ministry of Education in Mainland China. Professor Leung is also the first ever Changjiang Scholar named in the field of Mathematics Education.
Most scholars appointed in the past were in the fields of Medicine, Science and Engineering, few were in humanities. Professor Leung’s appointment signifies the recognition by the Mainland government the importance of mathematics education and future research in the area. With specialism in the influence of culture on Mathematics Education, Professor Leung will continue on his collaboration with Southwest University (SWU) in Chongqing to research into the mathematics education of ethnic minority children. Education for “slow learners” in minority children has been based on a “deficiency model”, which Professor Leung thinks their learning "problems" could be a matter of cultural difference. He is planning to extend further his research to ethnic minorities in regions including Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Gansu.
Professor Leung will meet the media on December 8 (Monday) to tell his research plans and observation on mathematics education and theory building on the Mainland. Details are as follows:
