HKU Faculty of Dentistry and local charity join forces to promote oral health
20 Jan 2015
The HKU Faculty of Dentistry and the charity group Project Concern Hong Kong are co-organising an oral health campaign in 2015 consisting of three “Love and Clean Teeth Days” in different parts of Hong Kong. The first will be held in Tung Chung on January 24, 2015 (Saturday). The public and media representatives are cordially invited.
The day-long event will include free oral check-up and treatment services, free oral health consultations and demonstrations, and game booths with prizes (all on a first-come-first-served basis).
The details of the Tung Chung “Love and Clean Teeth Day” are as follows:
Date: 24 January 2015 (Saturday)
Time: 12:00 – 17:00
Venue: Public area beside Heung Yat House, Yat Tung Estate, Tung Chung
Medium: Cantonese
Enquiries: 2776 9081
Staff and dental students from the HKU Faculty of Dentistry, staff of the HKU University Health Services dental clinic, and dental staff of Project Concern Hong Kong will provide the outreach dental education and clinical services at the public exhibition.
The event is an HKU “Impact Project”, which is supported by the HKU Knowledge Exchange Fund and intends to help the community by applying knowledge learnt and research evidence generated at HKU.
In addition to promoting oral health and dental knowledge among the public, the HKU Faculty of Dentistry team will this year train staff of Project Concern Hong Kong to deliver prevention-oriented oral health services throughout Hong Kong using a dental service bus.
“Despite Hong Kong’s overall affluence, latest government figures show that the majority of adults in Hong Kong have varying degrees of tooth decay, gum disease, and calculus or hardened plaque,” said Dr Chun-hung Chu, leader of the HKU Impact Project and Clinical Associate Professor in Community and Family Dentistry at HKU. “Dental services are not readily accessible to people in public estates in residential new towns like Tung Chung, so they need outreach and mobile dental clinic services, and we hope our HKU Impact Project will help in the short and long term to fill this need,” he added.
