“Educating the “Global Citizen”: Policy and Practice in Asian Contexts” (rescheduled)

It is widely recognized that bilingual competence is the basic attribute of a global citizen. Equipping every student with bilingual or multilingual competence is high on the agenda of all education policy makers. Enormous amounts of resources have been committed by governments worldwide to trial and implement various models of bilingual/multilingual education.
In the Distinguished Lecture, Professor Tsui will share an overview of recent developments in language policies in Asian countries to meet the challenges posed by globalization and how policies have been translated into practice in the education sectors. It raises the question of why research findings on the efficacy of these models are often inconclusive or even conflicting and explores the possible mediating factors. Professor Amy B.M. Tsui is Chair Professor (Language and Education) in the Faculty of Education at HKU. From 2007-2014, she was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) at HKU and she led the historical four-year undergraduate education reform at HKU. As a scholar, Professor Tsui has published nine books and 100 journal papers and book chapters in the areas of language policy, teacher development, classroom discourse, and conversational analysis. She has presented numerous keynotes on both undergraduate curriculum reform and her research areas in international conferences in Asia, including Japan, S. Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Brunei, Taiwan and China, and also in the U.K., U.S., Europe, Australia, S. Africa, and Mexico. She serves on the advisory boards of a number of journals, the International Advisory Board of University of Helsinki, the International Advisory Panel of ELIS, Ministry of Education in Singapore, and the Governing Board of International Baccalaureate.
