HKU Faculty of Engineering “Invention for Schools Contest”
Award Presentation Ceremony
20 May 2016
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education is one of the main focuses in 21st century education. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) considers it important to enhance the younger generations' interest and creativity in STEM. With the ability in programming and integrating hardware and software, youngsters are better able to solve problems and turn their innovative ideas into practical and valuable outputs. Now with increased availability of low cost and easily programmable credit card-sized computers, such as Raspberry Pi or Arduino that can connect to a computer or TV, students can realise their creations easier than ever.
The "Invention for Schools Contest" is organised by the Faculty of Engineering at HKU, with the support of HKU Knowledge Exchange Fund and RS Components Limited. Over a hundred students from primary 2 to secondary 5 have joined the competition. They are required to use credit card-sized computers to make inventions that would be useful to their schools to compete for the Champion, first runner-up, second runner-up, the most innovative invention award, the most practical invention award and the best presentation award as set out for the Primary School and Secondary School categories respectively.
An Award Presentation Ceremony will be held tomorrow (May 21) to announce results and present the prizes. Live demonstrations by awardees and many interesting inventions designed by students will be the key attraction. The finalist entries can be found at:
