“Self-Directed Learning in Science (SDLS) Student Award Scheme 2016 –
The Young Scientists’ Party”
“Self-Directed Learning in Science with e-Learning Support for Learner Diversity and Smooth Primary-Secondary Transition (SDLS)” is a University-School Support Programme funded by the Education Bureau, and hosted by the Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE), Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong. This is a three-year (2014-2017) project, aiming to provide support to teachers and schools to implement self-directed learning (SDL) in the Science Key Learning Area (KLA) in the upper primary (P4-6) General Studies and lower secondary (S1-3) Integrated Science subject in Hong Kong schools. The ultimate, overarching goal is to nurture and develop students’ self-directed learning ability and equip them to become confident and capable life-long learners in the 21st century so as to improve students’ self-efficacy and achieve smooth transition from primary to secondary school education in the science KLA. The Students Award Scheme (the Scheme) is a signature event for students in our participating schools (both primary and secondary) to showcase and celebrate a wide range of their achievements on self-directed learning progress and outcome, e-learning and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related areas on their learning in General studies and Science learning. Apart from this, teachers and principals will also share their practical experiences in their learning design as well as school implementation to serve as a hub for the promotion of SDL, e-Learning and STEM education among schools.

There are 30 schools participating in this project this year and all are invited to attend the Scheme, which is designed in accordance with self-directed learning elements. Through the Scheme, we aim to help teachers to better understand about self-directed learning and to encourage students to work more on knowledge building. There will be both within-school awards and inter-school grand award to encourage and recognize the good work of teachers and students.

Science, Mathematics, and Art (SMArt) Project 2016 Exhibition at HKIA

Period: Now until July 14

The largest exhibition of the Science, Mathematics, and Art (SMArt) Project 2016, co-organised by the Faculty of Science of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), is now being held at the Hong Kong International Airport. The exhibition showcases the artworks inspired by science and mathematics, as well as the videos which illustrated the creation process. STE(A)M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) is a global trend in education. This exhibition will demonstrate the effort in this direction by the University and HKSTP, which will be shown to hundreds of thousands locals and tourists arriving or departing Hong Kong every day.

The SMArt Project 2016 aims to inspire more students to appreciate the intrinsic relationship between science, mathematics, technology, and art, through a series of interactive lectures and workshops. About 100 junior secondary school students from 40 secondary schools gathered to get SMArt about sugar art, pinhole photography, magnetic fluid, water-hating surfaces, ceramic art, as well as fractal structure on 16^th and 17^th January.

This exhibition was presented earlier in MTR Central station, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, HKSTP, HKU and ten local  secondary schools.

Painting Everyday Life in Myanmar exhibition

Period: June 13 to September 9, 2016

In coordination with Ian Holliday, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) at The University of Hong Kong and his Thukhuma collection, The University of Hong Kong Libraries will exhibit a collection of contemporary paintings by Myanmar artists.

About the collection

The Thukhuma collection is personal and partial. It does not display the full range of paintings now being produced by Myanmar artists, and certainly there are major gaps. The guiding principle is to present multiple artistic perspectives on a society in transition. Most of the paintings thus date from the past few years. http://thukhuma.org/

1. When old meets new Spanning Time: Revisiting the Aesthetics of the Northern Song Dynasty through Contemporary Chinese Photography

Period: June 9, 2016 (Sunday) to September 4, 2016 (Sunday)

The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and CAFA Art Museum (CAFAM) co-organise an innovative exhibition from July 9 to September 4, 2016, presenting works by three artists from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) – Yao Lu, Wang Chuan and Miao Xiaochun. Through their photos and videos, each artist reveals the social landscape of contemporary China and the aesthetic relationship between contemporary art and traditional Chinese culture.

2. Mexican Modernity: 20th-Century Paintings from the Zapanta Mexican Art Collection

Period: June 3, 2016 (Friday) to August 14, 2016 (Sunday)

Mexican Modernity displays, through 40 paintings, the development of painterly styles and social representations of Mexico, from the more European influenced compositions to predominantly indigenous themes that regularly appeared as liberal Mexico sought to distinguish itself from its Spanish colonial past. The exhibition aims to introduce the different, and at times unique styles, such as muralist art and neomexicanismo, and to highlight the importance that Mexican local painters played in the development of neo-expressionist and postmodern art, as well as the colour palette and compositions that are today celebrated as significant contributions.
