18 May 2017
Team DAELead from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has won the champion in the Airbus Fly Your Ideas 2017 global student competition held by Airbus in partnership with UNESCO. Their effective and innovative design of a Private Stowage Compartment (PSC) underneath passenger’s feet beat the other 364 entries by around 5,500 participants from all over the world
The team comprised four undergraduate students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering: Mr. Darwing Li Kin-wing, Mr. Leo Lo Kwun-yu, Mr. Stewart Leung Ng Shu-wai and Mr. Hayden Li Hean-ting. Under the supervision of Dr. C.K. Chan from the same department, the team spent a week at the Airbus ProtoSpace facility to compete against four other teams from the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Australia and France in the Final of five teams. Team DAELead has been selected by an expert team of judges as the winner on May 17, 2017 at Toulouse, France.
Professor Norman Tien, Dean of HKU Engineering said: “I am very delighted to see our students’ outstanding performance that has been recognised in an international competition. Their achievement demonstrated engineers’ ability in identifying and providing solutions to tackle real life problems in a practical and innovative way.”
