The champion of Airbus Fly Your Ideas competition
HKU DAELead Team to share success story
29 May 2017
Team DAELead from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Hong Kong has won the champion of the Airbus Fly Your Ideas 2017 global student competition. Their Private Stowage Compartment (PSC) design, an effective and innovative storage space underneath passenger’s feet, beat the other 364 entries by around 5,500 participants from all over the world.
“The judges were impressed by the vision and skill of Team DAELead in seeing such a simple but effective solution for improved passenger experience," said a statement on the Fly Your Ideas website.
The inspiration of PSC came from a minivan incorporated with underfloor stowage design. The team believed the concept could be adopted in aircraft cabin to make air travel a more distinctive option to travelers, in particular, to optimise boarding efficiency, maximise carry-on capacity and enhance passenger experience.
A media briefing will be held on May 31 (Wednesday) for DAELead team members to share their success story.
They will recall how they worked together under enormous pressure to visualise, prototype and test their idea at the Airbus ProtoSpace facility in Toulouse, France, after being shortlisted one of the top five teams for the Final Presentation. Upholding the motto of Mechanical Engineering “Simple is the best”, they were able to beat other teams which had presented ideas and designs looked to be more sophisticated.
DAELead team members include Mr. Darwing LI Kin-wing, Mr. Leo LO Kwun-yu, Mr. Stewart LEUNG Shu-wai and Mr. Hayden LI Hean-ting and Dr. CHAN Chi Keung, Lecturer of Department of Mechanical Engineering.
