HKU Faculty of Social Sciences celebrates its half a century of impact

The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) celebrated its half century of impact on society at its 50th Anniversary Reunion Dinner held on December 4, 2017 (Monday) at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Faculty was honoured to have its distinguished alumnus the Hon. Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Executive of the HKSAR and Chancellor of HKU; Professor the Hon Arthur Li, Council Chairman of HKU; Professor Peter Mathieson, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU; and Professor William Hayward, Dean of Social Sciences, officiate the memorable event. Over 1,300 guests, alumni, friends, students and staff members witnessed this warm reunion, being “socientists.”
In her speech, Mrs Carrie Lam recalled her student days, saying the Faculty had instilled within her a motivation to analyze social issues and a great passion for contributing to the betterment of society. She said, “[The Faculty] has nurtured and produced numerous public leaders for our community. I look to the faculty and the students of the Faculty of Social Sciences to be an advocate for inclusive growth.”
Professor Peter Mathieson also showed his appreciation to the Faculty on its enormous contributions to the University together with the community, “The Faculty certainly has much to celebrate, given the advances and growth it’s seen over the last half-century. The Faculty members have been responsible for some pioneering research advances and for equipping its students with the knowledge and ability to be of service to a steadily developing society.”
Established in 1967, the Faculty has continued to contribute to the advancement of society and the development of leaders through a global presence, regional significance and engagement with the rest of China. To celebrate the half century impact, the Faculty are glad to present 50 videos highlighting some of its interdisciplinary, innovative and international endeavors which have created remarkable impacts on education, research, scholarship, leadership, and to the community as a whole.
