“Win at the Starting Line”

The Faculty of Education, in support of the University’s drive to strengthen knowledge exchange, one of the three strategic themes of the University’s Strategic Development, takes the initiative in knowledge sharing with the public by organizing a series of education seminars for parents. The past seminars on Mathematics, English, Liberal Studies, Information Technology, studying abroad, use of voice, creativity, private tutoring, parent-school partnership, early childhood education, social media and bilingual proficiency, etc. held since 2010 received enthusiastic response from teachers and parents.
Our Faculty is going to organize the 14th seminar on “Win at the Starting Line” in December 2017. In the seminar, Dr Samuel Chu, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, The University of Hong Kong (HKU); Ms Helen Chan, Senior Teacher (Teacher-Librarian), Lam Tin Methodist Primary School; Ms Alison Fung, Teacher-Librarian, St. Patrick’s School, altogether with students and parents will discuss and share with participants on how to develop children’s good reading habit with school, community and online resources and how to develop joy in reading and writing.
How to win at the starting line? Reading is the key! Through nurturing a good reading habit, and develop your children’s reading interest, reading ability will develop naturally. Through numerous research, it was found that reading ability is linked to scholastic performance. Besides expert sharing from our guest speakers, exemplar students will also share with us on their views on how “Reading Battle” has impacted their lives, including developing joy in reading and writing, strengthening family and social relationships, improving academic performance, developing higher order thinking skills.
