HKU Faculty of Dentistry ranked No. 1 in the world in three consecutive years
01 Mar 2018
The Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong is ranked the top dental school in the world in the latest QS University Rankings by Subject 2018.
The Faculty, following 2016 and 2017, is once again honored to be ranked Top 1 in the subject of Dentistry among 364 institutions from different countries this year. The remarkably high score obtained by the Faculty indicates its overall outstanding performance, which is measured against academic and research performance including citations per journal paper, the productivity and impact of works published, and academic and employer reputation.
The Faculty’s continuous success is contributed by its focus on research, education and knowledge exchange. The Faculty engages outstanding teaching and research professionals from 17 countries, attracting talented local and international students from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Asia and other parts of the world. All these lead to the attainment of advancing oral health and well-being for the people of Hong Kong as well as its neighbouring regions.
Professor Thomas Flemmig, Dean of Faculty of Dentistry, was very excited about the Top 1 ranking. He said: “I am most delighted to learn that our Faculty has ranked the top dental school for three consecutive years. It reaffirms the global recognition of our achievements in offering quality academic programmes for training professional dentists.”
The Faculty of Dentistry was established in 1982. Over the past 35 years, the Faculty has developed various programmes for training dentists including undergraduate programme, research postgraduate (RPG) and taught postgraduate (TPG) programmes in the disciplines of Applied Oral Sciences, Dental Public Health, Endodontology, Operative Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Periodontology and Prosthodontics.
“Being the sole dental school in Hong Kong, we have great responsibility for training and providing the best dental professionals for Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area. To address the shortage of dentists, especially dental specialists in Hong Kong, we look forward to increasing the number of undergraduate and postgraduate students in the year to come," said Professor Flemmig.
The Institute of Advanced Dentistry (IAD), a centre of excellence for the management of complex and severe oral conditions, is recently established to serve as a referral centre for practicing dentists. It also provides education opportunities and multispecialty advanced dental services to the Hong Kong community.
With the joint efforts of all the staff and students, the Faculty will continue to strive for academic excellence and program innovation.
