Over 400 primary and secondary school students to participate
Ultraviolet Radiation Measurement and Application Design Competition at HKU
27 Apr 2018
Small amounts of ultra-violet (UV) radiation is beneficial to people and essential in the production of vitamin D. However, excessive exposure to UV radiation may result in acute and chronic health effects on the skin, eye and immune system, increasing the risk of skin cancers and cataracts.
To raise public awareness of UV radiation and enhance knowledge of and interest in information technology and meteorology among the young generations, The Ultraviolet Radiation Measurement and Application Design Competition, jointly organised by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the Hong Kong Observatory and the Hong Kong Meteorological Society will be held at the University of Hong Kong on April 29 (this Sunday). This year attracted over 400 participants from primary, secondary and international schools ranging from Primary 4 to Secondary 6.
The competition is the first of its kind in Hong Kong, it required students to design a device that is capable for measuring and put UV radiation to good use. Judging panel will judge the creativity, appearance, effectiveness and practicability of the UV radiation detector. Public are welcome to the exhibition and vote onsite for the “My Favourite UV Radiation Measurement Device Award” and “My Favourite UV Radiation Application Award”.
