HKU scholar Professor Ed X. Wu receives
the 12th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize by the CAE
04 Jul 2018
Professor Ed X. Wu, Chair Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Lam Woo Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Faculty of Engineering, the University of Hong Kong (HKU), received the 12th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). He attended the award presentation ceremony held in Beijing recently.
Professor Wu joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of HKU in 2003. He is an internationally recognized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scientist and engineer. Professor Wu has made significant technical contributions to MRI methodologies for modern biomedical sciences and healthcare. His research on diffusion MRI technology has significantly improved clinical diffusion MRI sensitivity and specificity for detection of tissues changes during disease progression. His recent study on brain imaging using functional MRI and optogenetic neuromodulation is considered groundbreaking, which leads to new ways to interrogate the complex brain functions and disorders.
The Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize is awarded once every two years and is considered as the highest national honour in the field of engineering and technology. It aims to recognize outstanding Chinese engineers and scientists who have made outstanding achievements and significant contributions to the field of engineering technology and engineering management. The award presentation ceremony this year was held in Beijing on May 30, 2018.
Established in 1996, the award has been extended to include candidates from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan for the first time in the last session. This year, all the three Hong Kong awardees, including Professor Ed X. Wu, were nominated by the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences (HKAES). Professor Wu is another HKU scholar to win this prestigious award after Electrical and Electronic Engineering Honorary Professor Chan Ching-chuen who was awarded in 2016.
