The 16th President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong Professor Xiang Zhang assumed office today (July 17, 2018).
Briefly addressing the media in the morning, Professor Zhang said: “We are going to build a great university here that is not only to train and prepare our next generation of leaders but also to make a societal impact in Hong Kong, Greater China and the world.”
Professor Zhang said he looks forward to working closely with diverse stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, alumni, as well as local communities and government, to build cohesive and sustained momentum and support.
In a bulk email to University members, Professor Zhang said his experience allowed him to appreciate the great potential of HKU and that he has confidence in the strengths of the University, such as its unique history and culture, excellence in teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange, as well as the dedication of staff and students.
Amidst the many challenges faced by higher education in the 21st century such as limited resources and global competition, Professor Zhang is pleased to see the willingness of the HKSAR Government to invest more in research, and the growing culture of educational innovation and nurturing entrepreneurship, which translates into great opportunities in HKU and beyond.
Professor Xiang Zhang is a world renowned scholar pioneering in micro-nano engineering. His current research focuses on materials physics, metamaterials and nano-photonics. Prior to joining HKU, he was the inaugural Ernest S. Kuh Endowed Chair Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Director of the Nano-scale Science and Engineering Center (SINAM). He has also served as the Director of Materials Science Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
