Traditional Guohua to Contemporary Expression
Tradition to Contemporary: Ink Painting and Artistic Development in 20th-century China
23 Aug 2018
The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will present the Chinese painting exhibition Tradition to Contemporary: Ink Painting and Artistic Development in 20th-century China. Curated from artworks within the museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition will be open to the public from 24 August through 18 November 2018. Works trace the evolution of ink painting in Hong Kong, and include many of the masters that have helped to build the city's art scene and museum collections.
An opening ceremony of the exhibition was held at UMAG today (August 23). Officiating guests included Former Chair Professor of Fine Arts and Former Director of the Art Museum of the Chinese University of Hong Kong Prof Kao Mayching, Head of the School of Chinese of HKU Professor Wu Cuncun, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Visual Studies of Lingnan University, Dr Michelle Ying Ling Huang, Chairman of the HKU Museum Society and UMAG Director Dr Florian Knothe.
UMAG’s exhibition makes reference to individuals and their networks, to teacher-student relationships and to the generosity of the numerous painters who have helped us to grow the museum’s holdings, and whose work constitutes the foundation of our educational work today. Since initiating our publicly accessible collection in the 1950s, UMAG has been closely connected to the development of these painters and their work, and has actively documented the evolution of their artistic talents and the Hong Kong art scene.
