HKU Faculty of Dentistry Hosts “Hat-trick” Celebration of
World’s No. 1 Ranking for Three Consecutive Years

The Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Hong Kong hosted a Reception to celebrate the Faculty being ranked World’s No 1 dental faculty by the QS World University Rankings by Subject for three consecutive years in 2016, 2017 and 2018 on 20 November 2018. The theme of the Reception is “Hat-trick” to symbolise the continuous success of the Faculty.
The event was attended by more than 200 guests including government officials, international scholars, dental professionals, generous benefactors, prominent business representatives, as well as alumni, staff and students, who joined together to celebrate this important milestone of the Faculty and share its joyous moments at the JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong.
The Guests of Honour were Professor the Honorable Sophia Chan Siu-chee, JP, Secretary for Food and Health of HKSAR Government; Professor the Honorable Arthur Li Kwok-cheung, GBM, GBS, JP, Council Chairman of The University of Hong Kong; Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Hong Kong; and Professor Thomas Flemmig, Dean of Faculty of Dentistry of The University of Hong Kong.
Professor Sophia Chan congratulated the Faculty on its achievements. “Since its establishment in 1982, the Faculty has upheld its mission to advance the oral health and well-being of the people of Hong Kong and the Region, through excellence in learning, discovery and patient care. I pay tribute to our dental school for its contributions in nurturing young talents and researchers for the health and wellness of the City in the past decades,” said Professor Chan.
Feeling proud of the remarkable achievement of the Faculty’s staff and students, Professor Flemmig, Dean of Dentistry said, “Being ranked World’s No 1 dental school by the QS World University Rankings by Subject for three consecutive years reaffirms the Faculty’s position as a global leader in dental education and research. The Faculty of Dentistry is the only faculty in Asia that has been ranked at the top continuously in the past three years. The outstanding performance of our staff and students and excellence in research, teaching and knowledge exchange are major contributing factors for our continuous success.”
“Going forward, we will be preparing for a major stage of development with The Institute for Advanced Dentistry (IAD), which is going to be an establishment dedicated to educating dental specialists in Hong Kong. We aim to educate more than 100 Masters degree students in 9 disciplines in IAD Multispecialty Clinic each year by 2020/21,” said Professor Thomas Flemmig.
The Institute for Advanced Dentistry is a centre of excellence for the management of complex and severe oral conditions. It provides postgraduate dental education, fosters clinical innovation, supports applied research, and offers continuing dental and professional education to practising dentists and specialists. It also serves as a referral centre for practising dentists by offering affordable multispecialty advanced dental care to the community.
