Initiated by Tsinghua University (THU) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the first “Hong Kong International Artificial Intelligence Summit” was held today (November 30) at HKU to foster research and collaborations on the applications of AI on Finance Technology.
"We are delighted to be partnering with Tsinghua University to host this Summit. HKU is strong in applying and analysing new technologies in medicine, manufacturing and finance, while Tsinghua is strong in research and development. This Summit will provide a platform for a fruitful exchange of ideas and practices between two cities and two universities, and leverage on the technical strengths and ecosystem of both to contribute to the development of AI,” said Professor John Kao, Vice President (Global) of HKU.
“We are moving towards an AI-driven world. Universities play an important role in taking us there, through education and research. By bringing together academics and industry to engage in collaborative dialogue and explore future solutions to global issues, the AI Summit represents an important part of our universities’ responsibility to stimulate knowledge, learning and collaboration,” said Professor Yang Bin, Vice-President and Provost of THU.
The Summit covered popular topics like using AI for big data analysis in different industries, designing deep learning algorithms, blockchain operations, and also discussed the opportunities and challenges of AI in the financial industry. It also looked at ways in which HKU can work together with THU to speed up the development of AI in China and Hong Kong.
HKU will continue to strengthen its applied AI research by investing more efforts in exploring the possibility of how AI can be applied in different areas to improve the quality of life. The introduction of a new interdisciplinary undergraduate degree programme in Applied AI in 2019/20 aims to nurture students to apply AI techniques in a wide range of industrial applications and technological innovations, and will be critical in providing future Research & Development manpower in AI.
