The University of Hong Kong announces the appointment of Professor Yue Chim Richard Wong as the Interim Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor from April 1, 2019, when incumbent Professor Paul Tam will step down from the position.
The decisions were made at the Council meeting today (January 29).
Professor Wong is currently Philip Wong Kennedy Wong Professor in Political Economy, and Chair of Economics, HKU. He served as Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University during 2004-2010.
Professor Paul Tam will return to his teaching, research and clinical work in the Department of Surgery and to steer the development of the Dr. Li Dak-sum Research Centre as its Director.
The University will soon initiate a new global search of candidates for the post of Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Tam said: “I am honoured to have had the opportunity to serve as Interim Provost, and to have worked alongside such talented and dedicated colleagues. I look forward to continuing to contribute to the success of HKU as a clinical professor in the Faculty of Medicine.”
Professor Wong said: “I am delighted to take up the post of Provost again to serve the University community at this time and thank the Council and President for providing me with this opportunity. I will do my best to continue Professor Paul Tam’s important work at the University.”
President Professor Xiang Zhang said: “I would like to thank Professor Tam for his contribution to the University over the past years, during which he worked tirelessly to uphold and elevate the academic profile of the University. I look forward to his equally important contributions to our academic endeavors when he returns to his academic position. I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Professor Wong for graciously agreeing to take up the position while the University launches a new search. I am sure the University will benefit from his deep knowledge of HKU and rich management experience during the interim period.”
