The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is ranked 10th globally in the latest 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings released on April 3. The new ranking focused on universities’ social, economic, and environmental impact, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which over 450 institutions worldwide participated in.
This follows HKU’s being ranked the first globally in THE’s Internationalization Rankings 2019 released earlier.
HKU’s performance is particularly encouraging in delivering the goals in Reduced Inequalities, Partnership for the Goals, and Quality Education, which are ranked 4th, 6th and 9th globally respectively, against an overall ranking at 10th.
As a university with global reach and influence, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is determined to bolster its commitment to sustainability. The HKU Vision 2016-2025 stated that the principles of sustainability will guide the planning and development of HKU at all levels, and that the University will respond purposefully to the SDGs.
As 'Asia's Global University', HKU's core mission is to provide holistic education of the highest international standards for all students, including people with a disadvantage, to fully develop their intellectual and personal strengths, advance human knowledge, and benefit the society. HKU is also committed to reducing inequality through cultivating future leaders with a sense of global citizenship and providing the support and resources to make education accessible to those with special needs. With ever-pressing sustainability challenges and urgency for innovative solutions, HKU took a strong leadership role in establishing collaboration between stakeholders from different sectors which is vital on a local and global level. These efforts are clearly reflected and celebrated in the THE Impact Ranking 2019.
HKU is now embarking on a journey to develop a holistic 10-year sustainability strategy and action plans aligned with the 17 SDGs. An interdisciplinary task force comprising professional and academic colleagues, as well as student representatives, has been set up for this mission.
