The Faculty of Education, in support of the University’s drive to strengthen knowledge exchange, one of the three strategic themes of the University’s Strategic Development, takes the initiative in knowledge sharing with the public by organising a series of education seminars for teachers and parents. Since 2010, past seminars on Mathematics, English, Liberal Studies, Information Technology, studying abroad, use of voice, creativity, private tutoring, parent-school partnership, early childhood education, social media, bilingual proficiency, etc. organised by the Faculty were well received by teachers and parents.
The Faculty will hold the 16th seminar on “Ways to Facilitate Language Development in Kindergarten Children” on October 12 (Saturday). In the seminar, Dr Anita Wong, Associate Professor, Faculty of Education, the University of Hong Kong; and two speech therapists, Ms Rosanna Lee and Ms Cecilia Au, will share with parents and teachers how to help kindergarten children learn languages more effectively.
Reading and writing development in primary school years builds on speaking and listening skills that develop in kindergarten years. We, however, do not pay much attention to kindergarten children’s speaking and listening development. There is much individual variability in oral language development. Research has shown that a fair number of children with speaking and/or listening problems between the age of 4 and 6 have more persistent Developmental Language Disorder, rather than short-term language delay. This seminar aims to share with parents and teachers some strategies to help children to learn new words (quantity, variability, explanation, repetition) and to learn how to express themselves more effectively (recast, connective and question).
Media representatives are cordially invited to the seminar and details are as follows:
