The University of Hong Kong (HKU) recruits the highest number of local non-Chinese speaking candidates through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) among all institutions every year. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Kainaat and Lareb are native Pakistani students, currently pursuing Bachelor of Nursing (BNURS) and Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) respectively. Both of them studied hard and secured a place at HKU through dedication and perseverance. They are attracted to the University due to its international outlook and the use of English as medium of instruction in a multicultural environment. Both were able to adapt quickly to university life and enjoy access to internships and exchange opportunities that offer them a competitive edge for their future career pathways, and allowing them to contribute to Hong Kong.
Determined to become role models for non-Chinese speaking students
Kainaat (Year 3 Nursing) is aware of the language barrier ethical minorities face when using healthcare services, which prompts her to think about working in the healthcare sector to serve as a bridge of communication, and provide ethnical minorities with a better healthcare experience.
Lareb (Year 1, BASc) sees that many non-Chinese speaking students lack confidence in their HKDSE subjects, especially in Mathematics, which bars them from entering local universities. Besides being a Mathematics tutor for her juniors, Lareb hopes to become a Mathematics teacher after graduation to set an example for non-Chinese speaking students and encourage them to be more confident and to believe that entering university is an achievable dream.
Kainaat and Lareb will meet the media to share their study experiences, university life and career aspirations. Details are as follows:
