The University of Hong Kong (HKU) held an inauguration ceremony today (August 31) to welcome new students for the academic year 2021-22.
Addressing students in a welcoming speech, Professor Xiang Zhang, HKU President and Vice-Chancellor used the “Sun” as an analogy of “Hope” to encourage students to maintain hope in a rapidly changing world. He said the past year had been difficult with the Covid-19 pandemic and the chaos that affected peoples’ lives, and reminded students to look to the future with optimism.
“I can’t speak of hope without acknowledging the complex challenges in this city we love. Of course, it’s not just the pandemic. Division and disappointment in recent years have created fault lines in our society. We must reflect, and find a way forward with respect, compassion, and kindness for one another.” He said.
Professor Zhang referred to the generations of thought leaders nurtured at HKU and encouraged students to unlock their potential and unleash their imagination, saying that their innovations will progress the human condition and advance human society.
HKU students represent the best of the generation and will be the ones who mould the global future. Supported by the reputable faculties that have earned the reputation as leaders in areas of their expertise, they will be cared for by a family of like-minded individuals. President Zhang advocates a full student experience at campus and hopes that next year will be a happy one as the University celebrates its 111th anniversary.
“You will begin a journey of wonder and discovery, and the experience you gain here will help you thrive in a rapidly changing world. The future awaits you. So long as the sun rises, there is reason to hope. Welcome to HKU!” Professor Zhang said.
