The Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development (CICID) of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) today launched a new Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) booklet entitled “Modular Integrated Construction Supply Chain in the Greater Bay Area for Hong Kong Development: Drivers, Opportunities, Constraints, Concerns, Measures and Strategies”. This booklet is a public policy deliverable as part of the research project entitled “Enhancing MiC supply chain in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) for Hong Kong Development” funded by the Strategic Public Policy Research (SPPR) Funding Scheme (Project Number: S2019.A8.013.19S) of the Policy Innovation and Co-ordination Office (PICO) of the HKSAR government.
In the Welcome Remarks at the launching ceremony, Professor Max Shen, Vice-President and Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) of HKU highlighted the significance of the booklet. He said, “The findings offer insights into policymaking on the MiC supply chain and will help the construction industry to better understand and seize opportunities for MiC supply chain enhancement and development in the GBA. Through the concerted efforts of academia, government and industry, MiC will continue to advance and contribute to the long-term development of Hong Kong and the whole GBA.”
Speaking at the event, Ir Ricky Lau JP, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) of the HKSAR government re-echoed the government’s commitment to MiC development in Hong Kong. He further indicated the crucial role of the GBA supply chain to MiC development in Hong Kong. He also advocated for the widespread adoption of MiC by appealing to the industry to help promote its use.
Introducing the booklet, Professor Wei Pan, Associate Vice-President (Research and GBA) of HKU, Executive Director of CICID and Principal Investigator of the research project said, “The findings will help various stakeholders to understand the MiC supply chain in the GBA for Hong Kong’s development and develop business plans related to MiC adoption. The identified measures and strategies provide a solid foundation for the government to better formulate and implement relevant policies to further promote MiC adoption and to collaborate with industry partners to establish an effective MiC supply chain in the GBA for Hong Kong’s development.”
