To encourage more sport talents to join the HKU family, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will launch a new “Top Athletes Direct Admission Scheme” in 2022/23 to admit top athletes based mainly on their sports achievements.
HKU launched the “Sports Scholarship Scheme” in 1995 to facilitate outstanding athletes to pursue both academic and sports aspirations in parallel. As the first university in Hong Kong to launch such a programme, it has provided support to over 600 young athletes in the past 20 years.
Students admitted via the two programmes will receive support from HKU in various aspects of sports pursuit and academic development, targeting their personal development needs and allowing them to fully develop their potential.
A media conference will be held on January 25 (Tuesday) to introduce the details of the scheme. Track and field athlete Ms Fong Yee Pui, a Bachelor of Arts graduate who participated in 2012 London Olympic Games women’s 100m will share her experience on how to strike a balance between practice and study. Track and field athlete Ms Ho Kin Ling (Hannah), a Year 1 Bachelor of Science in Surveying student who broke the junior record for Girls’ 400 metres in Asian Youth Athletics Championship 2019, and fencer Ms Yung Long Ching (Vingee), a Year 1 Bachelor of Social Sciences student who ranks 4th in the Ladies’ Foil Junior, will also be sharing their experience as an athlete and an HKU student.
