In 2021, Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong (HKU-SWSA) and pediatricians, have jointly conducted a societal-wide prevalence study on childhood allergic diseases in Hong Kong. Over 2,200 schoolchildren and 1,800 parents participated in the survey, and it found that the prevalence of childhood eczema among Hong Kong primary schoolchildren was higher than those who resided in the Asia-Pacific and Western regions.
Since 2017, Dr. Celia Hoi Yan Chan, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong, has initiated an effectiveness study of a face-to-face psychosocial intervention programme for children with eczema and their parents. The study was a randomized-waitlisted control trial with the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of a psychosocial intervention programme in improving the wellbeing of the parents and their children with eczema. 219 children aged 6 to 12 with eczema and their parents have participated the study. Over 25 groups have been conducted. Findings indicated that there were significant improvements for parents in reduced perceived stress, anxiety and depression, and better quality of life and holistic wellbeing. Moreover, the parents were found to have more distress when compared with the children.
Dr. Celia Hoi Yan Chan and the research team will present the findings at a media briefing. Hence, in response to the challenges during COVID-19 pandemic, an online non-pharmaceutical programme will be conducted and a randomized-controlled study on the effectiveness of the programme will be launched.
The media briefing will be in a hybrid mode. Details are as follows:
