Previous research indicates about 10% of older adults in Hong Kong, meaning over 200,000 of them, are displaying depressive symptoms. The older adult population are more prone to emotional distress as compared to ordinary adults, affecting their mental health, and are more likely to fall into depression and other mental illnesses. In view of this, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust approved over HK$366 million to initiate the “JC JoyAge: Jockey Club Holistic Support Project for Elderly Mental Wellness” (JC JoyAge) since 2016, to provide holistic community-based support to older adults that are at high-risk or currently experiencing depression.
In view of the stress caused by the COVID-19 fifth wave upon Hong Kong citizens, especially in the older adult community, The JC JoyAge HKU team joined forces with 29 social service units, and conducted a telephone survey of nearly 5,000 older adults, on their mental health from April to June 2022.
The Press Conference will announce the survey results, illustrate how the project can link up with community-based mental health resources, and enhance the community support and awareness towards older adults affected by mental health issues. The captioned event also invited a Peer Supporter and a Service Recipient from the project to share their experience in the project.
You are cordially invited to the Press Conference. Details of the event are listed below.
