A pregnancy ended by miscarriage or stillbirth can be physically and emotionally distressing for couples. There are about 8,000 pregnancy loss annually with 1 out of 5 pregnancies ending up with pregnancy loss. Due to the sudden and unexpected nature of pregnancy loss, the process of grieving and coping with loss among bereaved couples is ambiguous. Couples tend to conceal their sadness as such experience is seldom acknowledged by the community.
As funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, Jockey Club Perinatal Bereavement Care Project has been started since January 2022. The Project is jointly collaborated by the Department of Social Work and Social Administration of the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association Family Wellness Centre, and Caritas-Hong Kong Grace Port-Caritas Miscarriage Support Centre.
This three-year project envisions to develop a seamless integrated care for bereaved couples from hospitals to the community with online and in-person support, and aims to render holistic psychosocial support for bereaved couples to go through the grief over pregnancy loss. The Project includes public education on reproductive health, information provision and remembrance set for funeral arrangement, individual and couple counselling, sex counselling and therapy, psychosocial support groups and expressive arts programs. Competence training and e-learning materials for health and social care professionals will also be provided.
The online kick-off ceremony cum symposium of Jockey Club Perinatal Bereavement Care Project will be held on 15 October 2022 (Saturday), which is also the annual Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, with Dr Tony Ko, Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority as an officiating guest. In the online symposium, representatives from each project partner will share the experience in providing bereavement support for those experiencing pregnancy loss in the community.
The event will be held via Zoom. There will be a media session immediately after the symposium.
