“The University of Hong Kong (HKU) welcomes the Policy Address in proposing a series of forward-looking and insightful policies on building a more diverse talent pipeline, cultivating entrepreneurial spirit, enhancing the local Innovation & Technology ecosystem, as well as the building of a liveable Hong Kong.
It is encouraging to see that the HKSAR government’s commitment to invest in academic and industrial collaboration and strengthening the I&T infrastructure and facilities, and a series of initiatives to attract and retain talents. The University welcomes the proposal to increase UGC-funded research postgraduate places, extend the limit of stay for non-local graduates (iANG), plan to nurture STEAM students, and opportunities for our youths, among others.
On top of these initiatives, building a sustainable and liveable Hong Kong will definitely facilitate HKU and other local universities to attract international talents, enhance the overall competitiveness of Hong Kong academia and build a strong pool of talent for the region and the country.
Hong Kong is home to some top-ranking universities in the world, which gives us the unique advantages in cultivating talents for the country. Hong Kong universities are known for our solid work in basic scientific research and well-established scientific research practices. We have an international academic environment, while backed by a strong Mainland market which provides opportunities for knowledge exchange and commercialization of the outputs of our researchers. With the support of the new initiatives, Hong Kong will surely attract top-notch scientists from home and abroad and this could help building Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology hub.
The Policy Address mentions the need to build a strong talent pool for Hong Kong, enhance collaborations and deepen synergy between cities in the Greater Bay Area, as well as strengthen its overall global competitiveness. We fully agree with this direction and consider it a fine blueprint for future higher education in Hong Kong.
The University strongly supports the national strategies of designating Hong Kong as the home for the “eight centres” in the 14th Five-Year Plan. We are confident that HKU’s upcoming projects combining humanities with world-class innovation and technology will place the University at the forefront of driving Hong Kong’s growth and success.
With the support of the HKSAR government, HKU will continue to contribute our expertise in making Hong Kong a better home for all.”
