The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to several waves of school suspensions in Hong Kong, posing significant challenges for students, families, teachers and schools, in adjusting to the disruptions and changing modes of teaching and learning in the New Normal. There are widespread concerns about the cumulated impact on students’ learning and wellbeing. The “eCitizen Education 360 (2022)” study has addressed these by building on the predecessor project “eCitizen Education 360 (2020)” carried out by a team of researchers from the University of Hong Kong (HKU). This study aims to investigate how factors at different levels (individual, family, school, and community) have affected students’ learning and socioemotional wellbeing. The findings offer insights that inform a restorative and futuristic roadmap for different stakeholders towards a resilient, future-oriented education ecosystem through a community-wide effort to co-construct a better New Normal for education.
Data collection was conducted from July to September 2022, involving 20 primary and 31 secondary schools. Over 8,000 students, 3,000 parents, 800 teachers, and 200 school leaders took part in the study. In this press conference, Professor Nancy Law, Associate Dean (Research) and Deputy Director of Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE), Faculty of Education, HKU, will present the research findings and provide recommendations for actions. Representatives from supporting organisations of the project would also attend the press conference.
