The HKSAR Financial Secretary Mr Paul Chan delivered the 2023-24 Budget today (February 22). A spokesperson for the University of Hong Kong welcomes the measures and said: "The University of Hong Kong welcomes the government’s budget measures to align with the National Development Strategies and allocate resources and cultivate talent to promote Hong Kong’s innovation and technology development.
The initiatives to capitalise the advantages of the Greater Bay Area, pool the efforts of industry, academic and research sectors to commercialise R&D, and establish an efficient innovation and technology ecosystem, are in line with the strategic directions of the University.
The Budget places emphasis on research fields including Life Technology, Artificial Intelligence, FinTech and Green Technology, and encourages cross-sector cooperation across institutions and disciplines. We are excited to learn about the government’s plans for developing an AI Supercomputing Centre, Microelectronics Research and Development Institute, and commitment to developing Green City and economy.
HKU’s world-class scholars and interdisciplinary research talent in the fields of AI, quantum technology, climate change and carbon emissions and green energy and we have a solid foundation in basic research. The University is dedicated to making original discoveries and benefitting the society through sharing of our research outputs.
We welcome the measures to provide internships for young people and opportunities for researchers. We are delighted to see these measures in helping Hong Kong to retain and attract young talent for future development.
