HKU Men’s Badminton Team wins the third consecutive USFHK Championship
12 Mar 2023
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) defeated Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) by 3:1 to crown themselves a “three-peat” champion for the very first time as they were victorious once again in the USFHK Men’s badminton competition final, held on February 25, for the third consecutive year.
Former HK Junior representatives and HKU Sports Scholars Mr Ko Shing Hei and Mr Joshua Wang Che produced top-notch performance in the first and second singles matches by winning in straight sets to give HKU a 2-0 lead. Though the team was not able to close out the final as Mr Chan Wai Hei and Mr Li Kai Hin lost to the PolyU doubles team in two close sets, Mr Ko Shing Hei and his partner Mr Leung Wai Chun stepped up again in the second doubles match to seal a crucial win for the team to complete the title defense.
“All the teammates are very committed to their training and strive for their very best to lift the trophy again,” said Dr. Michael Tse, Director of the Centre for Sports and Exercise (CSE).
“Being a three-peat champion is absolutely not an easy feat, and achieving that requires tremendous amount of hard work from many different parties, including all the coaches and trainers. So, apart from congratulating them for the victory, I would like to thank them for their devotion and commitment too.” Dr Tse added.
HKU men’s badminton team has remained undefeated since the 2020 season, and CSE Badminton Team Advisor, Mr Raymond Lui, said that he himself and the entire CSE felt so honored to be a part of this golden era of HKU Badminton Team, and to witness its growth and remarkable achievements.
“On their road to the championship, all players had endured many close matches and tough moments in their training and competitions as well. CSE is very proud of their achievements and perseverance, and their victory this year is indeed well deserved.” Mr Lui said.
The latest victory of HKU Badminton Team is such an inspiration and a boost of morale to all the other sports teams. And as always, CSE will continue to spare no efforts to help all teams to reach new heights and bring sports excellence to the University.
