The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has taken actions to tackle the defective concrete works identified in its ongoing campus re-development project at Pok Fu Lam.
- Defective concrete work was first identified in late April and again in May at a handful of locations in the carpark area. The project team had issued 4 site memos and a warning letter to the contractor of the project for rectification and improvement.
- Despite the issuance of these notices, no significant improvement was observed. As a result, a meeting was arranged with the contractor on June 6. Immediate actions were taken, including the replacement of the concrete gang and supervisor on June 8, and subsequently the contractor’s site engineer in mid-June. The project team has also strengthened site supervision measures for improvement.
- Rectification works for minor defects had been carried out. For more extensive defects, a detailed assessment is being conducted to ascertain appropriate rectifications.
HKU places the utmost importance on the quality of its campus construction projects and has been closely monitoring the progress and performance of the ongoing work. The University’s project team is working closely with relevant consultants and contractors to ensure that all project works will meet the required standards. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our top priority.
