The Council of the University of Hong Kong, at a special meeting today (Oct 9), resolved to set up a panel to look into the matters and issues emanating from the complaint emails received, under the “Whistle-blowing” Policy and Procedures. The Panel will investigate the matters and issues deemed appropriate, in accordance with the principles set out in the established procedures.
The Panel will report to Council within 12 weeks and Council will consider if follow-up action is necessary.
The Hon. Jimmy Ng Wing-ka, Chairman of the University’s Audit Committee, will chair the Panel. Other members include Dr. Brian Stevenson and Mr. Jason Chiu. Two other non-Council members to be appointed by Council.
In announcing the above Council’s decision, Ms. Priscilla Wong, Chairman of the Council, has added, “It is the responsibility of the Council, as the supreme governing body of the University, to handle whistle-blowing matters fairly and impartially. The Panel will uphold our motto Sapientia et Virtus, or the spirit of mingde gewu (明德格物) in Chinese, to look into the allegations fairly and impartially. The Panel will establish their findings through evidence-based investigation in an unbiased manner to ensure the conclusion is fair. HKU has a long and illustrious history, and we are grateful for the staunch support we have received from the community for over a century. Council will handle this matter in the most serious and responsible manner to meet the high expectations of our stakeholders.”
