“IDAY” Events Highlight:
"Future Readiness" Online Courses for Tips on University Essentials
To facilitate the seamless transition of secondary school students to the university environment and enhance their self-assurance as they embark on a new stage of life, HKU has launched two specially designed online courses, "Preparation for University: Essentials for Success" and "Introduction to Research Methods." The free-of-charge courses provide students with the essential skills to prepare for their university journey and excel in their future studies. During IDAY, Student Ambassadors provided a comprehensive overview and highlights of the courses to the participants.
MBBS Programme – A New Study Track
Under the existing MBBS programme, a new study track specifically tailored for high-achieving students titled “MBBS(Distinguished MedScholar)” was launched last year. Students admitted with outstanding academic achievement plus admission interview results, are given the option to enter a new study track in MBBS, namely MBBS (Distinguished MedScholar), through which they can complete MBBS in six years plus a Master of Research in Medicine (MRes[Med]) to be undertaken during Enrichment Year (EY) in the third year. Upon completion of MBBS and MRes[Med] and the one-year internship, students will receive financial support from the Faculty to pursue a PhD at a renowned university and potentially join the Faculty as clinical academics upon completion of PhD. Besides MRes[Med], students can also take other Enrichment Year options.
Faculty of Engineering Launches "FOCUS" – Cater to Emerging Industry Trends
The Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) and Bachelor of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering (BEng(BME)) programmes allow students to choose from 31 "FOCUS" options of study areas that align with recent developments in technology, the engineering industry, and society. These options enable students to focus on specific areas while deepening their learning and enhancing their expertise in technical fields. Examples of the "FOCUS" areas include intelligent transportation and logistics, artificial intelligence and robotics, data and AI systems, robotic and autonomous systems, robotic technologies, drones and control, materials science and engineering, as well as biomedical imaging technologies and applications.
Interdisciplinary Learning: Cultivating Future Leaders
With the advancement of technology, industries, jobs, and talent demands are constantly evolving. In the coming decade, talents with interdisciplinary skills and knowledge may be more favoured by employers as they are more capable of meeting the ever-changing technological needs. HKU has launched five undergraduate degree programmes under the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences. By enrolling in these interdisciplinary programmes and collaborating closely with peers and professors from the various fields, students will gain diversified expertise while understanding the connections between various disciplines. Graduates with an international perspective and cross-disciplinary thinking abilities will become highly sought-after future talent.
Other Faculties also organised a series of programme talks and experiential activities, including clinical demonstrations by the Faculty of Dentistry; mock lectures and workshops by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences; laboratory tours by the Faculty of Science; students’ work exhibitions by the Faculty of Architecture; as well as programme talks by HKU Business School, the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Law.
