As the sole training institute for dentists in Hong Kong, the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) upholds the highest standards of dental education and engages external examiners from other top Universities to ensure that its graduates meet or exceed international competency and safety standards. In the previous accreditation exercises in 2012, 2017 and 2023, the Dental Council Hong Kong (DCHK) has granted accreditation status to HKU Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme.
The Faculty of Dentistry is continuously enhancing its curriculum and welcomes the recommendations and suggestions of the Report on the Accreditation of the Undergraduate Dental Education by DCHK. The Faculty of Dentistry is also working closely with DCHK and proactively implementing the recommendations and suggestions of the Report.
The internship proposed by the Government is aimed to offer local graduates a valuable learning experience that enhances and consolidate their knowledge and skills obtained during their undergraduate education. This is achieved by providing opportunities for graduates to apply their acquired knowledge, enhance their clinical experience in real-life work settings, and become familiar with practice situations. As a result, this internship would provide a more comprehensive training and learning experience for our graduates. Furthermore, offering such internship opportunities would benefit the public by increasing access to high-quality oral healthcare services provided by local graduates.
To ensure that the proposed internship would provide a valuable learning experience for local graduates and further enhances their competencies above and beyond those obtained during their undergraduate education, the Faculty of Dentistry is actively working with various stakeholders, including the Government and the DCHK, on developing the arrangements for the internship programme.
