HKU Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2024
Showcasing the University’s Strengths in Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Development-related Initiatives
26 Oct 2024
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2024 was held on the HKU Campus today (October 26). An overwhelming response was received with over 75,000 general public members visiting the campus and participating in different events, including admissions talks, programme information sessions, facility tours, and experiential activities.
HKU is dedicated to fostering professionals in artificial intelligence (AI) and related fields, while addressing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocated by the United Nations. This year’s Information Day, themed “AI + Sustainability”, showcased HKU’s recent endeavours in these areas. HKU’s faculties and schools hosted various activities to demonstrate how the University’s diverse programmes and learning opportunities can prepare students with the essential knowledge and skills needed for AI applications and SDG initiatives.
On the Information Day, Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, was delighted to interact with prospective students and emphasised HKU's dedication to AI-readiness. Professor Zhang shared that the world is now shifting towards technology-integrated learning and encouraged them to equip themselves with comprehensive AI knowledge and skills, which span across all disciplines from sciences to humanities.
"AI-readiness is more than just a trendy term; it's a necessity in our rapidly evolving, digital world. At HKU, our commitment is to prepare our students for the future by providing them a vibrant and dynamic learning environment, where it nurtures curiosity, fosters critical thinking, and propels innovation. HKU embraces innovation and progress, integrating AI into our programmes and courses. We're delighted to reinforce this pledge with the creation of our new schools focused on data science and innovation," Professor Zhang added.
Other highlight activities on the Information Day included talks, workshops, laboratory demonstrations of cutting-edge innovations, interactive kiosks, game booths, and guided tours offered by different HKU faculties and student support units.
Establishment of the School of Computing and Data Science and the School of Innovation
HKU, attuned to global and societal trends, and committed to fostering interactive STEAM education, is pleased to announce the establishment of the School of Computing and Data Science and the School of Innovation. These new schools will provide cutting-edge, market-driven undergraduate programmes in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Statistics, Innovation and Technology. By imparting interdisciplinary knowledge and practical learning experiences, HKU aims to prepare students for diverse future career trajectories.
The School of Computing and Data Science will offer two new programmes: “Computing and Data Science” (Programme Code: 6999)* and “Statistical Decision Sciences” (Programme Code: 6779)*.
Meanwhile, the other newly established School of Innovation will offer a four-year interdisciplinary programme, Bachelor of Science in Innovation and Technology (Programme Code: 6602)*.
Launching of Additional New Programmes
Beginning in 2025, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Engineering at HKU will introduce a range of new programmes to cultivate students into exceptional leaders across various fields.
Faculty of Arts to Add Two New Programmes
Promoting Creative Industries as well as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
HKU’s Faculty of Arts will offer two new programmes: “Bachelor of Arts in Global Creative Industries” (Programme Code: 6274)* in which students will engage in courses such as (1) Film & Media Communications, (2) Gaming & Digital Humanities, (3) Visual Arts, Heritage & Museum Studies, and (4) Music & Performing Arts; while “Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Engineering in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science” (Programme Code: 6298)* is a groundbreaking 5-year double degree programme that integrates the technical expertise of engineering and computer science with the analytical insights of the humanities.
Faculty of Engineering to Add Six New Programmes
Launching the Bachelor of Engineering Elite Programme*, and Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence in Engineering*
The Faculty of Engineering has also further enriched its curriculum and will introduce several new programmes in 2025, including (1) Bachelor of Engineering Elite Programme (Programme Code: 6303)*; (2) Bachelor of Engineering in Data and Systems Engineering (Programme Code: 6315)*; (3) Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering (Programme Code: 6339); (4) Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering (Programme Code: 6353); (5) Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence in Engineering (Programme Code: 6377)*; and (6) Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Electronic Engineering (Programme Code: 6987).
Bachelor of Engineering Elite Programme (Programme Code: 6303)* emphasises training flexibility and curriculum elements that go beyond the conventional engineering education standards, preparing students to tackle new challenges in a range of highly competitive engineering sectors including, but not limited to, robotics, artificial intelligence, material technology, nanofabrication, semiconductor technology, construction automation, and sustainable development.
